Product Description

The Volumio Mini86 has one simple goal: be the most sensible x86-based device for USB DAC owners, seeking the best of the Volumio experience. I’ve searched trough the whole web for more than one year to find it, and tested it for another year to be sure it was actually capable of delivering the above. This is the source I use in my main system, coupled with iFi’s iPurifier2 to feed my main USB DAC.

Let’s see what makes the Mini86 such a great bang for buck Audiophile Music Player:

  • It’s powered by a dual-core Intel X86 Celeron 1007U clocked at 1.50 Ghz. This means it’s a powerful enough yet low consumption device for music playback, since its a fanless design (silent)
  • It comes in a quality made full aluminum case, which looks really nice (some of you might notice a slight resemblance to a famous fruity product)
  • Very fast on the networking side as well: Gigabit ethernet and dual antenna Wireless N
  • Complete and flexible with 6 USB ports, HDMI, Analog in\out connections
  • Available in 2 configurations: standard 2GB RAM\8GB SSD and NAS Edition 4GB RAM\1TB HDD
  • Connect any HDMI display to it, and you’ll see the Volumio UI. This means you can control it with the WebUi or with a mouse\keyboard combo

x86 Power, Fanless operation

X86 platforms offer some advantages over ARM counterparts, the main one is speed: the system is way smoother, loads faster and browsing even big libraries is handled like a charm. On top of that, X86 is immune to USB transfer rate issues that some ARM single board computers have. So, if you listen to music via an USB DAC, X86 represent the ideal platform to use. Since the Celeron 1007U is designed for low power usage, the Mini86 is also fanless: this means that its dead silent.

Solid I\O, great looks

The Mini86 is indeed one of the prettiest looking devices we offer. While this does not add anything to its capabilities, it surely helps to have a device that can sit beautifully near your beloved gear. And, thanks to its variety of I\O, it is one of the most flexible solutions as well: 6 USB, audio in\out and HDMI. The nicest way you can use it is to connect the HDMI to your TV, and browse your library with a Smart Remote or USB Wireless Keyboard.

Two configurations to fit everybody’s needs

The mini86 is available in two configurations: the standard 2GB of RAM, 8GB SSD is intended for people keeping their music on NAS or hard drive, while the 4GB RAM and 1TB HDD is meant for those who want to store their music on the Mini86 and make it become their NAS.

Ready to play, with Volumio

The Mini86 will be shipped from China with Volumio already installed, and with its own power supply. Just connect the Power Supply, and after 1 minute you will see the Volumio Hotspot appear. Just connect to it (password: volumio2) and you’re ready to listen to your favorite music.
The Mini86 is compatible with 99% of USB DACs currently on the market.

Shipping costs and product Informations

The Mini86, as all Volumio Shop products, is shipped by our supplier in China (for more informations about Volumio’s dropshipping see the Shop Informations page). WHAT OUR COMMUNITY MEMBER SAY ABOUT THE MINI86

Regarding the Mini86. So far I am quite impressed.
Delivery was convenient. The parcel arrived after two weeks directly from China.
No installation required. Connection to the hotpot and changing network was easy. The same is true for scanning the library – the reason why I gave up my Cubox. Considering my huge library consist mainly of HiResAudio with 24/96, 24/192 and DSD I must say, scanning the NAS was very fast and painless.
My Teac UD501 DAC was immediately recognized. Also my FAT32 USB hard drive mounted straight away. I connected to the internal HD manually with smb on OSX (not autodetected on OSX) . Airplay is more or less stable (Sierra sucks)
For me most important: NO dropouts with HiResAudio and the GUI stays always very responsive! The soundquality is out of heaven 😉 The only glitch at the moment: DSD direct to the UD501 seems not work. The Display on the DAC says PCM354,8
It is still new and I don’t have that much experience yet. Using the wired connection, I did not check WIFi yet for example. But so far absolutely great, well worth the money. And yes, it is out of-the-box: Unpack, plug, scan and play!

Hi Massimo, Mini86 is sold only without USB3.0 and one single LAN.
Don’t know specifically about your DAC. But if the manufacturer says it works on Linux, then it will work. Searching online showed this thread:
      https://www.head-fi.org/threads/teac-ud-h01-usb-dac.560940/page-21

You can ask in the forum to see if one uses your DAC with Volumio

5 out of 5 A Brilliant Product. (after what I have read about it)!

Hi, as a professional musician and studio producer, mastering and live engineer for 40 years. I have been a Audiophile for all this years of course! (many people believe it’s a person who have expensive high-end equipment, check google what it’s stands for)!
I received a Boss Player from Allo and it got Volumio! I was thinking what is this? Today I’m thankful for I got it, because next to Roon is it the best program for Playing, Listening on Music. Now to the Volumio-MINI86. I have just ordered it, but I never ever buying or ordering anything when it’s coming to Music, equipment, records…before I have listened carefully and tested it! It’s like buying a car without seeing or take it for a drive. But The Volumio-MINI86 is different because I love the program so much and what I have, reading about it. So am I totally convinced that it’s a Music Player, I’ll never going to regret buying without listening carefully and listening on. So I’m looking forward to getting my Volumio-MINI86 delivered and unpacking it, connecting and Playing Music 🎶. Thanks Volumio.

4 out of 5 Mini86 HDMI control on tv

    (verified owner)

Very happy to receive my Mini86 with Volumio. Shipping from China to the USA, quick and easy. Any suggestion on a smart remote control for my LG Oled TV to manage Volumio/Mini86 ? Connected to HDMI1, screen shows beautifully but cannot get my LG magic remote to move the cursor… Keyboard/Mouse combo works fine but not practical for daily use. I intend to use USB to send the sound to my Amp/DAC.

Is it possible to send music files from a laptop through wifi and store them on a HDD connected to the Mini86?

The manufacturer of Firekey states ”
The RedKey Works without drivers on any Mac, Windows PC and Linux PC”. So if this is accurate, it will work out of the Box with the Mini86

IMHO there’s no audible difference from SSD and HDD, except the SSD is totally silent while the HDD is slightly audible (if you’re near it). If you connect a USB HDD it will be automatically recognized, mounted and indexed

    Question

Did you perhaps make a comparison between mini86 + USB to main dac vs. Raspberry Pi + Allo Digione to that same dac through coax connection?

If your DAC does not accept USB, Digione is the best choice. If your DAC accepts USB, the Mini86 is better in any aspect (speed, USB transmission, memory etc)

Yes I did, and I think they are at the same level (if mini86 is connected via iFi iPurifier2), except with Mini86 you do get native DSD which is not possible with DigiOne

No, just DDR3 (I don’t think it won’t make any difference at all in any case..). The system can accomodate 8GB and 1TB Hard drive. However, adding more RAM IMHO won’t make any significant difference, as in worst case scenario we will use not more than 1,5 GB. When we will implement full RAMPLAY maybe…

Yes you can add more memory, extending SSD or HDD and adding more RAM. Volumio does not support sacd.iso files, but I can provide you a custom mpd that does it (but I don’t use it in Volumio since its not very stable..). Yes you can turn off wifi completely.
The mini86 will update Volumio with OTA updates: when a new update is out, he will download it and update automatically pretty much like your Android i\os phone.

Can the mini86 receive faster memory than DDR3? Maybe DDR4? What is the maximum memory the hardware can accommodate, 8GB? Also what is the maximum HDD and SSD we can install?
