G2 labs Odroid DAC solution is developed by true enthusiasts for enthusiasts.
The Odroid DAC 4452 with 3.5″ Touch display and remote is a product that comes out of many evenings, months and years of experementing, measuring and listening. The kit is a combination of products that been developed carefully and thought through from the beginning to the end.
The Kit contains:
- Odroid DAC 4452 main board
- 3.5″ Touch Display
- IR Remote Control
- RCA connectors
- Control module
- Cables and spacers
G2 Labs has set up a special price for Volumio Community: 149 euros instead of regular 185!!!
Odroid DAC 4452 is a high resolution stereo audio reference DAC module, prepared for ODROID-C1+ and ODROID-C2 single board computers. We chose to develop a solution based on Odroid because we believe its the better single board computer for audio use.
The main board hosts the Asahi Kasei Microdevices 4452 D/A converter with a fully balanced design and a unique discrete buffered output stage. In the chain we have implemented a ground isolator which removes ground problems which are common in many audio DACs. The signal is not processed in any way and directly fed into the DAC. AKM are well known for their I/C in the audio spectrum and for their natural sound.
Since we are not fans of opamps we never use them in the singal path. Instead we have a unique buffer which can drive long cables or low impedance headphones. The output is of course balanced (XLR) which contributes to make the Odroid DAC 4452 a unique device. There is of course possibility to use unbalanced (RCA) outputs as well.
3.5” LCD touch display and a remote control is included and are easily connected together with DAC board.
Odroid DAC 4452 has an I²S and DSD input, which makes it a DAC module that can be used with basically any audio source with an I²S or DSD output.
Why we like it:
- Asahi Kasei are regarded as Hi-End DAC Chips
- The only Odroid DAC available with XLR outputs (RCA is also an option)
- Discrete buffered output and ground isolation
- Touchscreen for volume control and DSP included
- Can be used in combination with Odroid or with a USB to I2S Converter
External PSU needed (not included in the kit):
Odroid DAC 4452 doesn’t need any hardware configuration. The only thing needed is to have I²S drivers/modules installed and running when used with Odroid single board computer. It works straight out of the box with Volumio, just select ODROIDDAC from output devices.
The Odroid DAC 4452 does not have an Hardware Volume control which can be controlled from Volumio. To set the volume you can use the interface on the touch display or via its remote control.
Usage with Raspberry PI
The 4452 DAC can be used with the Raspberry PI, but only in conjunction with the Kali Reclocker and it requires jumper cables connection since it won’t fit directly on top of it, since there is no pinout compatibility. And frankly, the sensation is that this setup would be fantastic… When used in such a way, the I2S Option to use with Volumio is “Generic”.
