Literally a little miracle: the Kali Reclocker is a FPGA I2S reclocker that will deliver a jitter-free listening experience, with your existing i2s DAC! It’s compatible with Raspberry PI B+\2\3 and with Sparky board. Kali will reclock your Audio signal with its high quality crystal, and provide clean Power to both PI and the I2S DAC. Results will blow you away!

Product Description

In the digital Audio Domain, the accuracy of Clock is very important and it will greatly affect reproduction quality. To put in simple terms, a better Crystal Clock means better sound. Things like sound details, instrumental separation, 3d image are hugely impacted by jitter, and Clock directly impacts jitter.

So, welcome Kali (the goddes of Time), probably the most clever piece of equipment you can get for your Volumio powered PI. Why? Most SBCs use a very cheap crystal (that results in higher jitter) in order to save costs, PI is not an exception (since it doesn’t even have it exposed..). The Kali i2s reclocker solves this issue by reclocking the data coming from the PI (or any other compatible board) and feed jitter-free music into your I2S DAC. Not only that, power Kali with a 5V power supply, and it will directly feed clean Power both to the PI and your DAC.

WE REALLY THINK THIS IS A GAMECHANGER
And we’re not alone. Read some of the enthusiastic feedbacks on the product comments or on the forum thread.

Why we like it:

– It’s truly a gamechanger! The first time I listened to it, I was simply stunned (and this doesn’t happen that often…)
– Sound improvement is really noticeable: 3d image, details, instrumental separation are vastly better
– It works with any slave i2s DAC that uses generic drivers (tested with Mamboberry DACs using Hifiberry DAC setting, G2LABS AK DAC , and  Audiophonics Sabre, it does not work with IQ Audio DAC+ nor Hifiberry DAC Plus\PRO), refer to Compatibility section to know if your DAC has been tested with Kali.
– With the Piano HiFi DAC, it makes a great bang\buck combo!
– With a single 5V Power supply, you will power the PI (or any compatible SBC) , the Kali and your I2S DAC. If you don’t have any, you can use Allo Power Supply
– Lots of users reported they got even better results with iFi Power Supply

What can be improved:
– Its dimensions are not hat compliant (it’s longer than a standard hat). So if you plan to stick it in a particular case, you’re out of luck.
– It works only with DAC in slave mode

IMPORTANT: Kali is currently sold in two variants: a 22/24MHz version capable of up to 192kHz playack and a 44/48MHz version capable of up to 384kHz playback. On sale is the 44/48MHz version (the best one).

How it works

First, it has a very low jitter NDK crystal feed by LDOs in series for ultra quiet power supply. Second, the FPGA will read the incoming stream, will buffer the DATA 0.7s while discarding the incoming clocks. Using the NDKs it will reclock the buffered data OUTSIDE the fpga (since fpgas introduce about 200ps of jitter) and provide a MCLK/BCLK that is direct from crystal, providing a jitter-free (almost) to your DAC. It provides accurate Masterclock to DAC and FPGA.
The Kali requires a +5 Volt power source to operate. Power should be applied to the 2.5mm DC JACK.

Meanwhile, it will clock the file using the correct crystal (there are 2), according to sample rate.

Works great with most I2S DAC and the PIANO

Kali will not work if your DAC is a master. Dac has to be slave. If your DAC uses the Hifiberry DAC, PI-DAC or RaspyPlayv3 parameter it will work right away!

I have it working with an AK DAC, which is in slave mode. So if’s the same as your setup it will work. I’ve tested only dop and that works. DSD will not, since there is no driver for DSD over i2s

5 out of 5 Kali FIFO with Rasp Pi B+

Fantastic. Worked 1st try with my Raspberry Pi B+. i2s from the Kali is going into my Minidsp Minisharc that then feeds 4 Buffalo III Dacs. Couldn’t get the i2s to work from Raspberry Pi when connected direct, but as soon as I added the Kali everything worked perfectly. Good SQ as well. Plugs straight on top of the Raspberry pi.

Im using Linkwitz LX521s that I built a couple of years ago. I built a single case amplifier with a Hypex SMPS1200 to power 4 ucd400s for the 4 x 10 inch Seas woofers. The lower mid and upper mids are is powered with Neurochrome Parallel-86 amps and the tweeters have Neurochrome Modulus-86 amps. Managed to get a custom 750va transformer in there as well. It took a lot of work to get everything in the case and have it run nice and cool.

The standard DSP that everyone uses on the LX521s I’d the Minidsp 2×8/4x10HD, which is what I used initially. I had been using it in my car and had updated its power supply with D Class regulators. It was ok with the LX521s, however I knew there was room for improvement.

I am now taking the reclocked i2s from the Kali FIFO that sits on top of my Raspberry Pi B+ running Volumio. The i2s feeds the slave i2s input on my Minisharc, which then drives 4 Buffalo III DACs.

For me, this is a no brainer, I have wasted so much time trying to get a useful i2s signal from the Raapberry Pi. You can see all my posts on the subject on the Volumio and Miidsp forums. When I plugged the Kali in it just worked. Sounds amazing as well. Significantly better than using a SPDIF input through the Minisharc Digi-FP module.

One of the other positive things about the Kali, is that unlike the recockers I have built I the past, this one does not produce the clicks and drop outs during play back. I’ve been listening all day and have only heard a couple of clicks and overruns.

The I/V stages of the Buffalo Dacs have been upgraded with Texas Components TX2575 bulk foil resistors. Power is from a mixture of Paul Hynes regulators onboard the DACs and high power shunt regulators for the I/V stages. Have other modules to add now I have got the system working perfectly.

This system sounds significantly better than using the standard Minidsp 2×8/4x10HD

5 out of 5 OMG didnt expect that!

just got it connected half an hour ago and the reclocker-piano combo sounds amazing. i have thrown my family out of the livingroom to listen a bit more to really test it out.. im from the northern part of denmark and up here we dont show exitement at all.. if i were to show exitement it would be for this combo. the sound is more open-wider with more detail than i remembered on any of the other setups i have had. this combo is well worth the money and delivers a great quality that i look forward to testing out more ..

getting more and more impressed with the sound from this and the piano dac. I heard som old AC/DC albums yesterday, from the album Highway to hell 25 second into the track walk all over you .. i listened to that part over and over again.. and i have never heard the drums like that before hard to explain but there is more info in the sound more detail and you get a feeling like this is the way that these drums are supposed to sound.

At the bottom of the board there is a U.FL socket that outputs Kali’s MCLK.

I use an external dac with spdif and i don’t want a dac inside my raspberry, does the reclocker is compatible with the Digi+ Module ?
Is it possible to reclock an external dac ? or only the raspberry ?

Yes, since it’s a reclocker, it generates the mclock and it sends it out via i2s toghether with the other signals

    Question

I see themax output frequency i about 192Khz. I’m currently playing DSD 128 files in DOP format, I use the USB output of the RPI3 connected to my external DAC. The DAC has an I2S input, if I install the Kali board, will I be able to play DSD as today ?

Your DAC is probably a master DAC (external one) so the Kali will not work with it

I have an Odroid c1+ and use hifishield. Hifishield uses Odroid’s is2 slot.

I want an upgrade and lets say I am going to buy Mambo Ls+ But it uses i2s too!

How am I going to use reclocker and any i2s dac at the same time?

The reclocker sits in beetween your DAC and the i2s connection, in fact bridgin them.. So the only way to use it is to have them attached like so: i2s out of Odroid -> Kali -> I2S DAC
