TOPPING D50 DAC not working with Direct DSD

Please help,

Just got a New Topping D50 DAC, Installed Volumio on a Raspberry Pi 3 B+ and everything is wonderful, apart from Direct DSD.

If I select Direct DSD, the DAC shows PCM 352.6kHz 32 bit where Volumio is showing DSD 2.82 MHz 1bit (INCORRECT)

In DSD over PCM (DoP) mode, the DAC shows DSD64 2.82 MHz 1bit and Volumio is showing DSD 2.82 MHz 1bit (CORRECT)

any advice?

Thank you

No-one?

I presume you are looking for help rather than making an announcement
Post moved from “Staff communication” to the “help” section

It’s summertime holidays, so things are a little slow here , I would like to take this up.
But it’l be a week or two, AFAIK there was something with dsd direct and kernel registration.
Please feedback if you’re still interested or solved to issue another way.
Or when we forgot :frowning:

GĂ©

Yes, i am interested i solving this problem. I do understand that its holiday time, as a matter of fact i will be off for mine from the 11th.
Back on the 29th, so I am sure we can pick it up then.

So am I right to think that ‘Direct DSD’ should work and not convert to PCM?

Thanks for your reply

Yes, though I have no experience with it myself.
When you google a little with “Topping D50” and “volumio” you will find several positive reports.
Which also makes me think it could be something local.

I tested today a loaned SMSL SU-8 (similar to D50, same chipset, same XMOS) and failed also playing DSD out of USB, only noise and pops and cracks. Not sure if this helps. Awful under USB, no matter RPI-3 or desktop PC, simply crap. While SQ is superb (coax and USB tested) usability under USB is awful and crappy. If I had to operate this unit only USB I would have sent back.

According other reports Volumio works fine with it, pity I don’t have one to compare with.
Perhaps someone with a working Topping D50 could comment?

In DSD over PCM (DoP) mode the Topping D50 is incredible, soundstage, dynamics like i’ve never heard before.

I use a Denon AVR-X440H as a pre-amp with an Arcam P90 power amp to drive a pair of Focal Aria 926.

Playing DSD or flac, from the Denon is good, but the Topping does a much better job.

I have seen the list of DACs that Volumio support out of the box, and the D50 is included, that is why i found it strange when direct DSD did not work.

Any advice will be welcome

Volumio isn’t listing my D50 under output devices. I’m going to flash the SD and see if that works. Any other suggestions?

Would somebody be so kind to give us the output of “lsusb -t” when a D50 is connected?
And also give us the last 10-20 lines of “dmesg” just after connecting the D50?

When the USB output device is actually working direct DSD works fine. This is on MyVolumio.

So, myVolumio is using a different kernel version.
I have to dig deeper and check if the quirks table for kosv66’s kernel has the D50 registered as a DSD capable device.

@kosv66: could it be you that you are not using the latest version?
I should have asked long before, sorry, but if it is not 2.444 then you are not using the version with the latest kernel.

No, i was using the latest version at the time. I also upgraded to 2.452. Same result.

same thing is happening on my Sparky USBridge.
